Strong Showing by Saber Fencers at Junior Olympic Championships

Y14 fencer Kiera Barnes started strong in Cadet Women’s Saber Friday, Feb. 17, winning 5/6 pool bouts, only losing 5-3 to the #12 Cadet fencer in the nation.  After a bye and a DE win, she lost in the round of 64, finishing 38/162.  This earns her cadet points which trickle down to Y14.

Early Saturday morning Will Nikolai fenced Junior Men’s Saber.  Stuck in the only pool of 6, he did the best he could, winning all 5 bouts which included a 5-1 victory over the #50 fencer in the nation.  This earned him #22 seed and a presumed cake-walk to the round of 32.  Unfortunately, he was undone by the mental aspect of fencing and lost to the #107 seed and finished 66/237.

The following morning Y14 Kiera contended in Junior Women’s Saber. She again won 5/6 pool bouts, beating the #17 in the nation Junior fencer 5-3 and the #54 fencer 5-0.  This earned her a #25 seed and a presumed cake-walk to the round of 32.  Unfortunately, this was fencing and not cake-walking and she lost to the #104 seed, finishing 66/181.

These are really strong pool performances and show what our lead fencers are capable of when they toughen up their mental part of the game.  Congratulations!
